Incurable Wounds

“I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” Jeremiah 32:27

Sometimes Spotify nails it.

When whatever I have chosen to listen to ends, Spotify will often play songs it thinks are in line with whatever I chose. I also think the Holy Spirit guides this “randomness” at times to get my attention. Sometimes a new song to me or one I haven’t listened to for a while will stop me in my tracks.

It is in that moment that I know God is trying to get my attention and has something He wants to tell me.

“Our God is Able”* by Safari is one such song. As Spotify played it for me for the first time, it resonated with me, and I immediately added it to my “liked songs” so I wouldn’t lose track of it.

As I listened to the song again over the next few days, one lyric really stood out to me:

“The trials that seem unbeatable, He’ll carry you through.

We know He’s able. Our God is able.

The wounds that feel incurable He can heal them for you.We believe there is nothing that our God cannot do.”

My grief wounds have often felt incurable. My life has changed so much since Doug died, and it is easy for me to feel like my sadness or whatever I am currently struggling with (insert your own wound here) will never lift.

That is a lie!

If I allow myself to believe that lie, I will start into a downward spiral and move farther away from God. My enemy would like nothing better than for me to do just that!

But, if I recognize the lie when it is presented, I can follow Jesus’ example when He was tempted and fight back with the Word of God. Even if I don’t have a verse memorized or at the ready, I can verbally say “That is a lie” and then ask God to help me. He will calm my spirit and direct me to a verse that I can meditate on to refute the lie.

Some common synonyms for “incurable” are:

  • Terminal

  • Chronic

  • Unalterable

  • Hopeless

Does that sound like our great God to you?

Of course not!

Through today’s verse, God reminds us that nothing is too hard for Him. There is no part of scripture that demonstrates any deficiency or inadequacy of our great God. And, as the lyrics of today’s song remind us, “Our God is Able.” In our heart of hearts we know that to be true.

Dear One, what grief wound have you been tempted to label as “incurable?” State it aloud and renounce it for the lie that it is! Then bring it to the Lord and ask Him to cleanse you of it and to cement the truth of His Word in your soul. Next find a verse that speaks to what you are feeling. Then write it down and work on memorizing it. That way when you are tempted to believe that lie again, you can counter it immediately with scripture.

Praise God that “incurable” isn’t in His vocabulary. It shouldn’t be in ours either!

Let’s Pray

Submit yourselves, then to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

James 4:7

Dear God,

I confess that there have been times when I have felt like what I am feeling will never change and that what I am experiencing is “incurable.” Please help me to recognize that nothing is incurable in Your eyes, including what I am experiencing right now.

Empower me to rebuke the enemy verbally by renouncing his lie as soon as it surfaces so it cannot take root and pester me further. Thank You that the same power that raised Christ from the dead lives inside me. When I resist the devil, he has to flee.

Help me to remove the word “incurable” from my vocabulary so I never view any part of my life beyond the reach of Your love and healing touch. Please forgive me for doubting Your goodness in my life or Your good plans for me.

Thank You Lord that I won’t feel like this forever. I know You love me and that You are healing me. Thank You for seeing my suffering and intervening in ways that only You can.

In Your Loving Name I pray,

Amen
